Hyakushou Kizoku is an autobiographical series based on Hiromu Arakawa’s real-life experiences as a farmer in Hokkaido before she became a renowned manga artist. The story humorously depicts her life raising cows, planting crops, and dealing with unpredictable challenges like bears and squirrels.

Through her interactions with her editor Ishii, Arakawa shares funny and insightful anecdotes about the realities of farm life, blending slice-of-life storytelling with humor.

Manga Origins: A Journey from Farm to Page

The Hyakushou Kizoku manga began serialization in Un Poco magazine on December 28, 2006. When the magazine ceased publication in March 2009, the series moved to Wings magazine in July of the same year. Written and illustrated by Hiromu Arakawa, the manga is published irregularly but has been collected into eight volumes as of December 2023.

The first volume was released on December 11, 2009, and subsequent volumes followed over the years. The eighth volume included two unaired anime episodes bundled with a DVD release.

The manga has been praised for its unique blend of humor and realism, offering readers an authentic glimpse into Japanese farming life. By December 2023, over 4.1 million copies were in circulation, showcasing its widespread popularity.
